A Quick Guide to Milk Alternatives
Milk Alternatives have taken the world by storm, filling grocery store shelves and battling for the public's affection. A once niche market has become a dominating force, causing the dairy industry to rethink its marketing strategies. Let’s take a quick look at some of the most popular milk alternatives today and explore their benefits and disadvantages.
1. Soy Milk:
A classic milk alternative, soy milk has been a popular food staple for centuries. Originally invented in China, soy milk consumption expanded to surrounding regions due to its many health benefits. High in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, soy milk is a great addition to any diet. On the downside though, soy milk is high in isoflavones, which acts similar to estrogen in the body. This has left some individuals concerned if consumed, they may experience negative health effects. This has resulted in many individuals avoiding soy products altogether.
2. Oat Milk:
Oat milk has recently come in fast to our local supermarkets, stealing the spotlight away from other dairy alternatives. A nutrient-dense beverage, oat milk contains calcium, potassium, iron, and B, A and D vitamins. Oat milk’s creamy texture has also made it a hit with the public and it is a great alternative for those with soy and nut allergies. Oat milk is also known as one of the more ethical options. As it uses 80% less land and produces less CO2 than other milk alternatives
3. Almond Milk:

4. Coconut Milk:
Although you can find coconut milk available at many cafes and on grocery store shelves, it never rose to the same level of popularity as soy or almond milk. This is in part due to its stronger flavour, which can overpower a dish or beverage. Even so, coconut milk is rich in electrolytes, anti-inflammatory, and supportive of heart health. Most of the asian vegan restaurants use coconut milk or cream as vegan alternatives to dairy milk. One big disadvantage though is coconut milk's high fat content, which can lead to unwanted weight gain.
5. Cashew Milk
Less popular than almond milk, you are unlikely to find cashew milk as an option at a local cafe or restaurant. Nutritionally though cashew and almond milk are similar, meaning their popularity mainly comes down to taste and cost. Overall cashews are more expensive, meaning you're more likely to find an almond cashew mix than plain cashew milk on its own. This has resulted in lower sales and overall consumption.
6. Rice Milk
Not quite as popular, rice milk can be found in select grocery stores and speciality shops. A less creamy alternative, rice milk has a grainy texture and earthy quality. Even so, rice milk is an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D and A, and is the best option for those with allergies. Rice milk has also been known to improve skin, digestion and bone health.
