5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going Vegan

If you're thinking about going vegan, or have recently made the switch, congratulations! Making the decision to live a more cruelty-free life is commendable. However, it's not always easy being vegan. I wish I had known a few things before making the transition myself. Here are five things I wish I knew before going vegan:

1. Veganism is more than just a diet - it's a lifestyle

Many assume that veganism is only about avoiding animal products and eating a plant-based diet. While this is an important part of the lifestyle, there are many other components to consider as well. From avoiding clothing made from real fur or leather to steering clear of beauty and cleaning products tested on animals - it's important to be aware of the broader implications that come with veganism.

2. Going vegan doesn't mean you have to give up all your favourite foods

When I first went vegan, one of my biggest fears was that I would no longer be able to eat any of the foods I loved. Thankfully, this couldn't be further from the truth! With all the delicious vegan options and vegan restaurants out there today, you can still enjoy many of your favourite dishes - With only a few minor adjustments.

3. You have to take vitamin B12

You can get all the nutrients you need from a vegan diet, with the exception of vitamin B12. This essential nutrient helps keep your red blood cells healthy and is found naturally only in animal products, such as dairy and eggs. To avoid any potential health problems, it's important to take a B12 supplement or enjoy fortified vegan foods like nutritional yeast.

4. Many foods are already vegan

Going vegan doesn't have to be expensive. Many common foods are already vegan, like hummus, bread, most grains, and some types of chips. Before going vegan, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with some of these cheaper options that you can incorporate into your meals.

5. It's ok to make mistakes

Making the switch to veganism can be challenging. From finding new recipes to deciding how to navigate social situations - there are a lot of challenges to overcome. Be patient with yourself and remember that mistakes are part of the learning process! Everyone slips up from time to time, so don't be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, do what's best for you and your body, and enjoy the journey!
